$20,000 on allergy meds: families ask for help with 'astronomical' costs

Brisbane Times

22 December 2019 - Ashley Wong has spent almost every day of her 18 years battling severe allergies, and it's come at a cost - with her family forced to pay $20,000 for medications alone over the past five years.

"That's not including all the special creams she has to use and special foods - there's a particular cereal she can eat which we buy from a health food store, and the soy or nut milks, it all adds up," mum Karen Wong told The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

The Wongs are calling on government to better support families managing the cost of a severe allergy, as a federal parliamentary inquiry examines the incidence of and response to anaphylaxis and allergies in Australia - which has among the highest rates in the world.
