Address health care costs not just insurance, says Medibank

28 February 2019 - Medibank Private has told federal Labor it should focus on industry-wide health care cost "drivers" and not just private health insurance in its proposed Productivity Commission inquiry.

Labor has promised to cap private heath insurance premiums at 2% per annum from April 2020 if it wins the federal election due to be held by May 18, and is seeking industry input to help determine the terms of reference for a Productivity Commission inquiry in advance so it can hit the ground running. .

But Medibank - one of the largest insurers - says in a submission to the inquiry that private health insurance is not the cause of the long-term blowout in healthcare costs but an effective price-taker and a value for money alternative for the taxpayer.
