APRA warns health insurers of forced mergers if risks not tackled

5 June 2019 - The prudential regulator has begun talks with private health insurers likely to face sustainability challenges as it warns it will force mergers if strategies to address risks fail.

Peter Kohlhagen, senior manager at the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, said today there needed to be a material uplift in insurers’ strategies to manage affordability challenges and policy change risks.

Speaking at a health insurance summit in Sydney, Mr Kohlhagen also warned that APRA would be “moving with some urgency” to ramp up the pressure on insurers to be prepared for the ongoing risks.
