Assessing and extending California’s insulin manufacturing initiative

19 January 2023 - Set against the backdrop of current debates about lowering drug costs, lowering the price of insulin—a lifesaving medication used by approximately 7.4 million people in the US—is one of the most important and politically salient issues for drug policy.

But efforts to reduce the prices of the most popular types of insulin have, so far, proven less than satisfactory. This includes a variety of attempts by states to put price pressure on drug manufacturers, almost all of which have been struck down by legal challenges.
