Australia left in the dark as manufacturers race to make Oxford COVID-19 vaccine

22 July 2020 - Australia may have to compete with other nations to import supply of the University of Oxford's coronavirus vaccine if it is successful, with major manufacturers not committing to local production despite having operations here.

The Oxford team unveiled promising interim results of a phase 1 trial on Tuesday, showing its vaccine candidate induces an immune response with minimal side effects. 

The project is considered a frontrunner in the race for the virus vaccine and AstraZeneca, the $US123 billion British-Swedish pharma producer, is a distribution partner.
