Australians set to be slugged for skin cancer removal under Medicare changes

9 December 2016 - Patients may be facing huge bills to have a skin cancer removed under changes to Medicare that experts fear could encourage people to wait longer for treatment.

And, disturbingly, health funds, not doctors will get to decide whether they provide a rebate for some smaller skin cancer removals.

Plastic surgeons are warning patients could be facing bills of up to $1,100 if they have a small skin cancer removed in a private hospital.

The gap would be up to $400 if the removal takes place in a specialist’s room.
