'Barriers in place': access to asthma medication key to reducing deaths

Sydney Morning Herald

8 September 2019 - High school teacher Gabriel Wenman admits she was once terrible at taking her asthma medication.

"It’s very dangerous, and I learnt that the hard way - at the end of last year I found myself in the emergency department," she said.

About 2.7 million Australians have asthma. Almost 40,000 people are hospitalised with the condition every year and in 2017 there were 411 asthma-related deaths. Despite its prevalence, the hospitalisation rate and the number of deaths has remained steady over the past 20 years.

Ms Wenman, who has lived with asthma her whole life, said part of the difficulty with managing her condition is the difficulties in accessing the medication that helps prevent attacks.
