Cancer patients pay up to $60,000 to stay alive amid Keytruda PBS listing delay

16 July 2026 - Hundreds of cancer patients have been forced to pay large sums out of pocket for a key immunotherapy drug amid ongoing delays that are blighting Australia’s medicines approval system as patients wait for affordable access to a medicine that could extend their life.

Immunotherapy drug Keytruda has been approved by the TGA as an effective treatment for 35 types of cancer, but it is funded on the PBS for the treatment of only 16 cancers.
