Cancer patients denied 30 medicines available overseas

Global Oncology
26 March 2014 - Terminally ill cancer patients in Australia are being denied access to more than 30 life saving treatments available to patients overseas fuelling a push for a cancer drug fund.

The crippling cost of new medicines is forcing patients to raid their superannuation, sell their homes and cars and beg family for money to find up to $180,000 to buy precious extra months and year of life.

A new report shows one in five new therapies are rejected for subsidy and it takes up to two years for successful treatments to gain a subsidy, too late for the terminally ill.
