Charlie Teo brain surgery controversy: society gives assurances

1 June 2019 - One of Australia’s foremost neuro­surgeons has branded as “disheartening” the practice of cancer sufferers seeking public donations or mortgaging their homes to pay for operations that can be performed effectively for free by world-class doctors in the public and private systems.

In the wake of a new outcry by specialists over the increasing number of people forced to crowd-fund operations to pay for Sydney celebrity surgeon Charlie Teo, Neurosurgical Society of Australasia president Sarah Olson yesterday sought to reassure patients the best possible care was available.

“We are incredibly fortunate in this country to have many highly skilled and talented neurosurgeons who dedicate their time and expertise … to ensure all Australians with brain cancer have access to free world-class treatment,” Dr Olson said.
