Co-ordinated clinical trials could help more Australians

29 August 2018 - Every year about 1000 clinical trials start in Australia, with cancer the most frequently targeted condition.

The clinicians’ enthusiasm for enrolling as many patients as possible into these trials is based on the repeatedly proven fact that outcomes for those on clinical trials are far superior to those who are not enrolled. Trial patients receive a higher degree of surveillance, from determining their health at the outset to monitoring their response throughout it, not to mention access to the best new therapies available.

Even though more than $1 billion is invested by government and industry annually, Australia still ranks around the middle of comparable nations in terms of clinical trial activity on a per capita basis — above Canada and Ireland, but below Sweden and New Zealand.
