Cost of exempting sole orphan drugs from Medicare negotiation

27 November 2023 - This cross-sectional study identified 25 “sole orphan” drugs qualifying for exemption from Medicare price negotiation. 

Medicare spending on these drugs increased from $3.4 billion in 2012 to $10.0 billion in 2021; the sole orphan exemption would have prevented Medicare from negotiating prices on drugs with $1.1 to $3.0 billion in Medicare spending in each year.
