But while capitalism promotes economic growth, innovation, and freedom, it also establishes a constant battle between investing in the public good, or for private benefit.
Exploitation in the American pharmaceutical industry is a salient example of this phenomenon. The companies that research, produce, and distribute the bulk of medicines on the market today are indeed privatised, allowing them to prioritise profits over patients.
