Cystic fibrosis patients, families angry over latest refusal to subsidise drug Orkambi

19 August 2017 - Cystic fibrosis patients have suffered another blow in their fight for access to a potentially life-changing drug which carries a $250,000 price tag.

Those with the life-shortening condition are pushing for subsidies for the new generation drug Orkambi, which is said to reduce hospital visits and the hours of daily physiotherapy needed to remove mucus from their lungs and digestive system.

Late on Friday the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee refused — for the third time — to recommend the drug be put on the PBS, as it continues to negotiate with drug company Vertex over its price.
