Cystic Fibrosis scandal: MP demands answers on delay of vital NHS drugs deal

Express

11 April 2019 - Theresa May yesterday vowed to take action over the lack of an NHS deal for cystic fibrosis drugs. The Prime Minister will step in and try to end the deadlock between health chiefs and US drugs giant Vertex over a proposed five-year deal for medications.

Vertex's CF treatments, including wonder drug Orkambi, are currently unavailable to NHS patients due to the impasse over prices. Yesterday at Prime Minister's Questions Mrs May was asked by Labour MP Ronnie Campbell why Orkambi is still not available on the NHS.

In response Mrs May told Westminster she vowed to raise the "important" matter with those at the Department of Health. Mr Campbell, MP for Blyth Valley, asked the Prime Minister about Orkambi on behalf of his seven year old CF-suffering constituent Charlie Foster. In February, the Daily Express told how Charlie has suffered a bug in his lungs six times, each one causing a fortnight stay in hospital.
