6 February 2017 - A life changing drug — previously unaffordable for Australia’s littlest cystic fibrosis sufferers costing $300,000 a year — will now be given to 2-5 year olds for free after the government reached a deal with drug manufacturer Vertex.
News Corp Australia can exclusively reveal Kalydeco, the world-first drug which treats the underlying causes of Cystic Fibrosis rather than simply its symptoms, will be provided for free to children suffering the disease before its listing on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme in May.
It will mean toddlers with the disease will go from taking 60 to 80 tablets a day in the worst circumstances, to as few as 10 tablets a day and prevent irreversible damage that could shave years off their lives.
