Declining HIV numbers bolstered by new prevention drug but more data needed

13 August 2018 - PHARMAC's decision earlier this year to fund anti-retroviral drug Truvada as a preventive treatment was hailed as a game-changer. Now, a few months on, more changes to HIV treatments are likely.

Changes to HIV medications are on the horizon just a few months after New Zealand became one of the first countries to publicly fund a "revolutionary" prevention drug.

PHARMAC has begun a three-week tender process for a selection of antiretroviral treatments to be provided to hospitals and community pharmacies around the country.
