Democrats’ plans to introduce prescription drug pricing reform face formidable obstacles

6 September 2021 - For years, reducing prescription drug prices has been a policy goal of (mostly Democratic) legislators at the federal and state levels. And, in a break with past Republican Administrations, former President Trump vociferously criticised rising drug (list) prices. 

His Administration forged ahead with proposals aimed at overhauling parts of the system of drug pricing in the U.S. These include requiring pass-through of pharmacy benefit manager rebates to Medicare beneficiaries at the pharmacy counter, and pegging the prices of Medicare Part B (physician-administered) drugs to what is paid internationally.
