Department of Health begins 3-yearly review of NICE

NICE

Announced in October by George Freeman MP, the minister responsible for NICE, the review will look in detail at the function, form and governance of NICE as a non-departmental public body.

All non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs) undergo a review at least once every 3 years. NICE’s review will begin this month, with a final report scheduled to be published in February 2015.

The triennial reviews aim to challenge the continuing need for individual NDPBs, both their function and their form, and review the control and governance arrangements.

The first stage of NICE’s review will examine the continuing need for us, and whether our form, including operating at arm’s length from government, remains appropriate. This will be answered by ministers. Given that NICE was established in primary legislation in 2012, we are expecting a positive conclusion to this first stage.
