Developing safe and effective COVID vaccines — Operation Warp speed’s strategy and approach

26 August 2020 - Announced on May 15, Operation Warp Speed— a partnership of the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Defense, and the private sector — aims to accelerate control of the COVID-19 pandemic by advancing development, manufacturing, and distribution of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics. 

Operation Warp Speed is providing support to promising candidates and enabling the expeditious, parallel execution of the necessary steps toward approval or authorisation of safe products by the FDA.

The partnership grew out of an acknowledged need to fundamentally restructure the way the U.S. government typically supports product development and vaccine distribution. The initiative was premised on setting a “stretch goal” — one that initially seemed impossible but that is becoming increasingly achievable.
