‘Distressed and appalled’: eye doctor sees red at overcharging by peers

25 October 2022 - Central Queensland eye surgeon David Kitchen has had enough of long-term, rampant rorting by some of his ophthalmologist peers.

“I’m distressed and appalled at how they continue to abuse the health system,” he said.

Kitchen says treatment for macular degeneration, an eye disease that causes vision loss and blindness for an estimated 1.8 million Australians, involves an injection into the eye, but this procedure was being done too frequently.
