Doctors call for shake-up of private health insurance rules

The Age

4 December 2019 - Doctors are calling for a boost to the government rebate for health insurance to make it cheaper for young Australians, while calling on health funds to return a larger chunk of revenue from premiums to members.

Australian Medical Association president Tony Bartone also called for a review of the rules which penalise people who get health insurance after the age of 30, saying the policy is "locking younger people out" while failing to prevent older people simply joining when they need surgery.

"Young people are dropping out at the same time as older people are joining up - and this may have increased premiums by another 3% over the last three years," Dr Bartone told the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday.
