Federal budget 2018: $1.3 billion plan to make Australia a medical technology leader

8 May 2018 - The Coalition has taken up calls for genetic and precision medicine innovations, announcing a new $1.3 billion health and medical research growth plan including $500 million to prioritise emerging study of genes and their functions.

A 2030 innovation blueprint report by Innovation and Science Australia chairman Bill Ferris in January called for a new "national mission" to harness genomics.

Tuesday's federal budget said the spending over 10 years would "drive a new era in healthcare for Australians."
