23 June 2019 - Australians with an aggressive form of brain cancer will no longer need to crowdfund or mortgage their house for an expensive but life-altering treatment.
After a large community push, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee has recommended that Avastin should be made available to patients with glioblastoma via the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
While Avastin does not cure patients, advocates say the drug does improve quality of life and gives patients and families some choice during a difficult time. However, at a cost of up to $20,000, Avastin is not a drug all patients have been able to access.
