Health gap fees up to 10 times higher in northern Sydney than elsewhere in NSW

21 January 2020 - Private health insurance gap fees are up to 10 times larger in northern Sydney than elsewhere in the state, the federal government's new fee transparency website shows.

However, the data can be deceptive because many of the best surgeons work in northern Sydney and they may charge very different fees, including discounts for pensioners, Australian Orthopaedic Association president Andrew Ellis said.

"It suits people like the health funds to destabilise the relationship people have with doctors by talking of greedy doctors, which I think is far from the truth," Dr Ellis said.
