Health insurance comparison sites don’t address affordability: ombudsman

The Australian

9 August 2017 - Comparison tools will not address the rising affordability concerns with health insurance, the commonwealth ombudsman has warned, arguing that switching between insurers and policies is not the issue.

The ombudsman, in its submission to a Senate inquiry on private health insurance, said while there had been significant public discussion about improving comparison tools to help consumers find new health insurance products, those tools failed to tackle the overall problems.

“New comparison tools will not address the overall problems for consumers as little evidence has been presented to our office through complaints that consumers find it difficult to switch from one insurer or policy to another,” the ombudsman said in its submission.
