Health insurance discounts will benefit only the young rich: consumer groups

7 August 2018 - The proposed private health insurance discounts for young people will benefit only rich young people and entrench a two-tiered system, healthcare consumer bodies say.

In October, private health insurers won a long-fought battle to offer premium discounts to younger customers in the government's $1 billion shake-up of the sector.

Under the Turnbull government's proposal announced last year, health funds would be allowed to give up to 10% discount to 18 to 29-year-olds and increase the maximum excess for hospital admissions in return for lower premiums.
