23 May 2017 - A drug that prevents the transmission of HIV could help detect and reduce other sexually transmitted illnesses, a Melbourne sexual health doctor says.
Fairfax Media revealed on Monday that a man taking part in The Alfred's Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) trial, recently tested positive to HIV at a clinic in Melbourne.
Hundreds of thousands of people use PrEP worldwide, but there have only been two confirmed cases of infection with a drug-resistant strain of the virus by someone taking the medication properly. A third case was reported in Amsterdam this year, and is still under investigation.
