How giving private patients priority in public hospitals is pushing up health fund premiums

6 December 2017 - Privately insured patients are jumping the queues for surgery in public hospitals and getting treated twice as fast as public patients, but it’s pushing up health fund premiums by $100 a year.

The faster access for private patients in public hospitals flouts the Medicare rules that require public hospitals to treat public and private patients equally based on the severity of their condition.

And even health funds say it’s not a good thing that their members are getting swifter treatment in a public hospital.
