Irish cystic fibrosis family face €12,400 bill after deportation victory in Australia

15 July 2019 - An Irish family threatened with deportation from Australia because their son has cystic fibrosis have been left with a AU$20,000 (€12,457) expenses bill after their four-year battle for residency.

Dubliners Christine and Anthony Hyde were overjoyed after a last-ditch appeal for government intervention led to Australian immigration minister David Coleman granting the couple and their toddler son permanent residency.

The Hydes initially applied for permanent residency in 2015 but were rejected because Darragh, 3, was considered a ‘burden’ to Australia’s health care system as a cystic fibrosis patient.
