Manchin wants Biden to oust FDA Chief over controversial Alzheimer’s drug approval

17 June 2021 - After some of the FDA’s outside advisors quit in outrage after the agency approved a controversial new Alzheimer’s drug, Senator Joe Manchin on Thursday castigated the agency’s interim leader, Acting Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock, and urged President Joe Biden not to offer her a permanent job as FDA head.

In a letter to Biden, Manchin faulted the FDA for approving an Alzheimer’s treatment by Biogen last week, even though an independent advisory panel recommended against approving the drug and questioned its effectiveness in a November meeting.
