Medibank mulls refunds as COVID-19 cuts costs

6 May 2020 - Medibank Private has flagged returning cash to customers from lower claims during the COVID-19 shutdowns, but only after a detailed assessment of whether demand for services and procedures bounces back strongly or the savings are more permanent.

The health insurance group said that it had postponed premium price rises across its Medibank and ahm brands for six months for all customers until October, equating to about $120m in customer savings.

Chief executive Craig Drummond also told the Macquarie Australia Conference 2020 that slightly more than 1% of customers had suspended policies during the crisis, which was “well within” expectations.
