More ill as state waits for vaccine

4 August 2018 - A vaccine to combat the most prevalent strain of meningococcal disease will be made available nationally, Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has promised as more Queenslanders are struck down.

Two new cases of the disease were reported this week, taking the state’s year-to-date total to an alarming 32. And peak season for the disease, that kills up to 10 per cent of sufferers and maims a further 30%, has only begun.

Of the five known invasive strains, only the quad-vaccine against ACWY is federally funded for 1-year-olds, with the State Government picking up the jab tab for teens aged 15-19, in a program due to finish in December, and for Year 10 students until 2021.
