National pharmacare cheaper than healing people who can't afford their drugs

17 September 2019 - A national pharmacare program could potentially reduce prescription drug spending by aggregating the buying power of all Canadians.

With multiple political parties proposing a national pharamcare program, health care policy has become a hot topic of late. Given all of the interest, I thought it would be useful to lay out some things to keep in mind when assessing the merits of such a program.

At present, what the final version of a national drug program will look like is unknown and will largely depend on election results. The party that wins and the type of government they form will both have implications for the specifics of such a program. What is known, however, is that Canada ranks amongst the highest in the world when it comes to national spending on prescription drugs.
