New-gen medicines are available for migraine and arthritis – but only if you fail the old drugs

25 June 2026 - Australia’s drug approvals processes act as a “rationing system” that forces people to fail treatment on cheaper drugs with more side effects before funding better medicines.

Millions of people who suffer migraine, inflammatory auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or bowel disorders such as Crohn’s disease are not initially provided publicly funded access to drugs considered first-line treatments in other countries.
