1 April 2019 - Founded in April 1999, the organisation has grown from one man with a borrowed laptop to a world leader in health technology assessment and guidance.
Launched as The National Institute for Clinical Excellence in April 1999 by the then health secretary Frank Dobson, NICE got off to a rapid and controversial start.
Sir Michael Rawlins was appointed NICE's first chairman and Sir Andrew Dillon as the Institute's first chief executive. With a laptop borrowed from his former employer, St George's Hospital, in Tooting, south London, Sir Andrew set about establishing the organisation.
