2 August 2019 - A woman who received a life-saving heart transplant now has to spent $250 on medication each month just to stay alive.
Katrina Rehlaender buys nine boxes of medications for $250 a month just to live with her donor heart, and she claims the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme is not enough to support those doing it tough.
It’s a phenomenal cost to bear for Ms Rehlaender, who expects to spend up to six months off work for future heart transplant surgery.
The anti-rejection medications she takes means her body doesn’t reject her heart, but one side effect of the drugs keeps Ms Rehlaender’s immune system weak.
