PBS listed progesterone pessary slashes preterm birth risk

31 May 2021 - A vaginal progesterone pessary is reported to be the first progesterone treatment to be reimbursed via the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for the prevention of preterm birth, following research demonstrating that vaginal progesterone can decrease the risk of preterm birth at <34 weeks by 49% and neonatal death by 69%.

Preterm births are the leading cause of death in children under five, with one in 11 babies born prematurely in Australia.
