Peter paid $60,000 to boost his cancer survival chances, but others miss out

15 February 2022 - Some cancer patients are dipping into their superannuation to pay for treatments under a “two-tiered system” exacerbated by the slow listing of drugs on the pharmaceutical benefits scheme, the Cancer Council says.

Melanoma survivor Peter Gourlay drew on his retirement savings and received help from family to pay $60,000 for immunotherapy to reduce the chances an aggressive cancer would return. The treatment was not yet available for this use on the PBS.
