Price ‘gouge’ on private patients for medical devices

13 September 2017 - Confirmation by Australia’s medical device industry that it slugs private patients a higher fee for some devices than it charges public hospitals has added fuel to calls for reform of the system.

The Medical Technology Association of Australia has revealed a difference of more than $300 million between public and private pricing of medical devices.

Matthew Koce, head of Hirmaa, which represents not-for-profit insurers, said it was “staggering” that after years of ­denial, the medical device industry was now conceding it had charged the private system higher prices for medical devices.
