Radical plan for bigger Medicare rebates in the bush

3 January 2017 - Health fund members in regional and remote areas would be given larger Medicare payments or more generous insurance sub­sidies to compensate for a lack of services, under proposals put to the Turnbull government.

Health Minister Sussan Ley has made health insurance reform a key issue for this term and, with Nationals deputy leader Fiona Nash, has highlighted the need to pay special attention to those living outside capital cities. The Australian revealed yesterday the government would also consider a plan to organise private health ­insurance policies into gold, silver and bronze categories.

As Ms Ley awaits reform proposals from the Private Health Ministerial Advisory Committee, a workshop organised by the government has pointed out the lack of services in some areas and the need for people to travel to bigger centres for treatment.
