Rare cancer treatment a success for Jie Eccles

9 December 2017 - Six months ago Jie wrote an open letter to the readers of news.com.au asking them to help save his life. Now he’s saying thank you.

Hi, my name is Jie and in June this year I wrote an open letter on news.com.au. I felt voiceless and I needed a platform catered to compassionate, intelligent readers. I had struggled for a long time with mental illness and was dealing with a terminal prognosis of myxoid liposarcoma — an aggressive form of sarcoma, a rare cancer that was being totally rude and getting in the way of my future. I was making preparations for my own ending when a clinical trial cropped up in my eleventh hour of need.

The problem was I needed $40,000 to make this trial. It was being conducted in Texas, and, like most people, I don’t have that kind of money on hand.
