Research backs case for health insurance discount for young

6 June 2017 - Young people are more likely to take out health insurance if offered a discount, new research shows, backing industry calls for the Turnbull government to consider the measure.

A survey of 2019 Australians, by finder.com.au, found that 60 per cent of Gen Ys said they would take out health cover earlier if they were offered a discount for signing up before they turned 30.

The research concluded that a financial incentive to join, such as lower prices, would have more success than the lifetime health cover loading penalty, which adds 2% to health insurance premiums for every year that Australians don’t have hospital cover after their 31st birthday.
