'Ridiculous' to force women to visit GP for a repeat pill prescription, pharmacists say

6 September 2019 - The Pharmacy Guild has urged Health Minister Greg Hunt to kick-start a process to allow women to get the contraceptive pill from the chemist without having to renew their prescription at a GP.

In a letter to the minister, seen by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, guild president George Tambassis said the measure would save women time and money and help ensure the pill was widely accessible.

"It is ridiculous a woman who has stabilised on an oral contraceptive [for at least 12 months] is required to regularly visit a GP just to get a repeat prescription," Mr Tambassis said in a statement.
