Senate confirms Califf as FDA chief in tight vote

15 February 2022 - The narrow 50-46 decision underscored the divisions on both sides of the aisle over agency policies on opioids and abortion medications and his ties to the drug industry.

The Senate on Tuesday narrowly confirmed Dr. Robert Califf as commissioner of the FDA, a key federal agency that has been without a permanent chief for more than a yearlong stretch of the coronavirus pandemic.
