Small town pharmacies suffer in Federal Government reclassification funding and fear for COVID vaccine rollout

10 February 2021 - The only pharmacist in the Midwest town of Northampton says the rollout of vaccines in rural communities could be hampered after changes to pharmacy funding saw some sole operators lose thousands of dollars while outlets in bigger regional centres gained funding.

Joanne Loftus, who owns the Northampton pharmacy, said the method for assessing Federal Government funding for pharmacies in rural and remote areas, which changed at the start of the year, had been a "kick in the guts" after a tumultuous 2020.
