12 June 2019 - When confronted with a post of someone crowd-funding a life saving operation for a sick child it is only human to want to click but the new trend for patients to go online to meet medical bills raises some damning questions about how Australia funds its health system.

As the Herald has reported over the past week, desperate people are increasingly throwing themselves on to the charity of the internet to fill in the huge gaps in the Medicare safety net. Many others are taking on debts to pay health costs. 

The controversial online hire-purchase service Afterpay is now entering the market for doctor's bills.
