11 March 2019 - A new mum hours out of surgery and suffering from blood loss was badgered by the finance department of a prominent Sydney hospital last year, demanding she sign her newborn baby in as a private patient.
The mother's story was one of many told to the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age following a report on how public hospitals are adopting aggressive tactics to push more patients to use their health insurance even if it offers no material benefit for them.
Others to come forward include legal experts and medical professionals who have slammed the practise as rampant and potentially a form of fraud.
