War on superbugs to end repeat scripts

7 October 2019 - Doctors will be prevented from prescribing repeat prescriptions of antibiotics after the committee that advises the federal government on pharmaceutical drugs recommended a crackdown.

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee has recommended the removal of repeat ­options for a range of common ­antibiotics in high usage, where no repeats are deemed therapeutically necessary.

Currently, scripts for common antibiotics such as Keflex and ­amoxicillin are commonly issued by GPs with an automatic repeat prescription even when an extra course is not medically necessary.
