Health insurers welcome Coalition review on natural therapies

8 April 2019 - Health insurers have welcomed a Coalition pledge to reconsider a ban on cover for natural therapies — only a week after the ban was implemented by the Morrison government.

Health Minister Greg Hunt yesterday announced a $2 million review of the evidence base for natural therapies, to be headed by chief medical officer Brendan Murphy with input from the natural therapies sector.

The Australian reported the previous review, by the National Health and Medical Research Council, found little or no ­evidence that 17 natural therapies were clinically effective. That was used to justify the insurance ban.
